We started making "Nick Saban Straw Hat Cookies" this week. Thought it was time. Figured they would be popular. Had no idea how popular.
First there was the blog post. That lead to hoards of visits to the blog from followers of the "Church of Saban" (I swear I am not making this up), then visitors from the online news site of the newspaper because someone posted a comment "these are the coolest cookies I've ever seen," and then this photo with a blurb on the front page of the (local) "West Alabama" section of the Tuscaloosa News by director of photography Robert Sutton.
All this was followed by a segment yesterday on "Fox6 News at 5"(we'll post the video as soon as we get it), and an appearance on WVUA Tuscaloosa News at 4pm today. Imagine the phone in our shop. Needless to say, the thousand-or-so University of Alabama themed cookies we had made for this week are long gone, and we're on our second thousand.
Now known simply as the "Saban Hats," these new confections are by far the most popular, but on the Friday before game day, practically anything Alabama is hot. We have red elephants with white A's, white elephants with red A's, red footballs, white footballs, and black and white "houndstooth" hats with a red hatband. Red velvet cupcakes ("Game Day" cupcakes), and little white-glazed petit fours with stylized red A's on top.
Next week is a bye week for Alabama. But we'll gear up for the next home game on the 18th against Ole Miss.
Roll Tide!
