I am not going to assume EVERYONE knows the University of Alabama is one of the main attractions in Tuscaloosa. Mostly for sports. The big rival is the OTHER state university in Alabama, Auburn University. Most of our customers are Crimson Tide fans, but some make it known they support Auburn. And, I have been told, Tuscaloosa is home to the largest contingent of Auburn fans outside the city of Auburn.
I took all this into consideration when I opened the bakery. While we openly display all things Crimson, especially during football season, we also cater to Auburn fans. When buying my first supply of colored sprinkles, I made sure to buy blue and orange as well as red and white. The red and white have been replaced many, many times. I still have the original carton of blue and orange sprinkles. So I am not sure where that LARGE contingent of Auburn fans buy their baked goods, but it's definitely not at Mary's.
I finally got tired of looking at six POUNDS of orange and blue sprinkles. Which is where the Snickerdoodles come in. A Snickerdoodle is a type of sugar cookie with a cracked surface and typically rolled in cinnamon sugar. We've foregone the cinnamon sugar in favor of sprinkles. They are chewy, good, and very popular. The color of the sprinkles changes by season (red and green at Christmas, pink and white for valentines, orange and brown for Halloween, red and white or blue and orange for football season.
So now, with no holidays coming up in the next few weeks, we've combined the Auburn colors with leftover Halloween colors, Christmas, and the UA mix to make a rainbow Snickerdoodle.
Voila, we've finally found a way to use up all those blue and orange sprinkles. We sold four dozen the first day!
