We live holiday to holiday at the bakery. But Cinco de Mayo doesn't usually figure high on our bake list. Except this week, when we had a sombrero cake.
The cake was actually for an anniversary, but they wanted a 3-D "Mexican sombrero with lots of decorations." Our first version had the red pompoms on the rim and the Mexican flag hat band. Then the customer came in with photos from the internet for inspiration, saying that it was nice and all, but not nearly decorative enough. She really wanted "over-the-top."
That's when we added the green "embroidery" with the M&M's, and the white and chocolate do-dads.
Perfect.
