A customer came in last week and needed a cake for the next day. She was a "regular" so we went looking for cake parts we could ice and decorate.
Me: "How would you like us to decorate it?"
Her: "I'd like it to say "We did it!" and can you draw a blue Rolex Sub-Mariner watch on it?"
So I am thinking "We did what?" but before I could ask, she explained...
"We sold over 300 vacuum systems last month. And the company gave him the watch to celebrate."
She and her husband own a Kirby distributor. And the vacuum systems in question sell for more than $2,000 each. All I could say was "Wow!"
I cannot imagine, in a place like Tuscaloosa (population about 180,000 -- or 65,000 households -- in the entire county) that there would be a market for 300 high-end vacuums in a year. Let alone in one month. That means one in every 216 households in the county bought a new,high-end vacuum system last month! For those of you who enjoy statistics, the median income in our county is just under $40,000, but it's not evenly distributed, and many, many households earn much less than that.
I'm sorry we didn't make a picture of the cake, but the market for that particular cake is probably pretty small...
