First, we delivered this cake to the Battle Freedman House. Smallish, but went with the white and lime green decor.
Then we loaded the car back up with the cakes for Selma and took off. We barely got over the bridge about a half mile from the shop when I had to hit the brakes for a red light. Checked the cakes, no damage done.
Not two miles later we ran into a funeral procession of about 50 cars. Alabama law requires you to stop for funerals, so we did, for about five full minutes. You can't pass either, so we inched along behind them for about two miles until they turned off the highway. I figured we were finally on our way until we took the next exit, only to catch up to the SAME funeral again. Another five minutes.
Then it was truly off to the middle of nowhere. Just look at the Emily's GPS. Absolutely nothing but the road we were on for miles and miles.
Then the slightest hint of civilization, if you can even call it that... "Lovely Dove Lingerie," which appeared to be a home business. I just HAD to slow down and take a photo. Not that we don't have these types of things in Tuscaloosa, but it was the "Custom Fitted" (smaller print in red, just below "lingerie") part that caught my eye.
Finally, our destination...Selma Country Club. The cake set-up took all of twenty minutes. Everyone was so polite. But, on my way to the ladies' room to wash my hands, I overheard a conversation among some elderly ladies playing cards.
"Oh, it's a big wedding..."
"Yes, I heard they were even having roast beef!"
There you go. Welcome to Selma, Alabama.
And we only forgot one set of the precut PVC pipe we had intended to use as supports, so the upper two tiers are supported by about two dozen drinking straws. Fat ones and skinny ones placed one inside the other for extra strength.
Total elapsed time, 5 hours and 14 minutes.
love the tidbit about the little old ladies' comments! :) lol. also, great tip about using the straws inside each other for cake supports. I never would have thought of that!

Oh you have no idea! I am from Camden, a rural community 1 hour south of Selma, a town that makes Selma look like Manhattan. Weddings in these areas are so old South that it would make Scarlett swoon. There is never a dull moment & if pigs in a blanket are served as an appetizer, then goodness knows she comes from good family :) lol. But their uniqueness makes them even more fun.
Glad you enjoyed the road trip!
