It catches my attention when the editor of Modern Baking magazine spends an entire page waxing eloquent about the benefits of social networking sites such as Facebook and Twitter to the retail baker.
I'm of that generation that remembers the early days of the computer. The mainframe. Then the PC. Then the laptop. Then the Internet, iphone, yada yada yada.
The bakery has always had a website, but it took my (younger) sister to drag me kicking and screaming into the blogsphere last year (come on, I don't really need one of those, do I?)
So Facebook is not such a stretch. Emily, the Facebook Queen of our bakery (and perhaps all of Tuscaloosa) has hundreds and hundreds of "friends." I'm pretty sure she can't imagine life without her iphone. So she was the obvious choice to help us get started.
She also convinced me we didn't need to Tweet -- Facebook updates could be just as effective. But does anyone really care about just baked bread? New cookies? The latest gelato or sorbet flavors?
Find us on Facebook. Become a fan of Mary's Cakes & Pastries. We'll reward you with some special offers (such as free baguettes tomorrow).
Not to worry. I've already been warned not to be annoying -- so we promise not to overdo it with useless banter. After all, that's what the blog is for, right?
