I figured this would be a problem. So did everyone else in my family when they saw what I was putting in my carry on.
A heavy ceramic crock and a tortilla press.
"It could be used as a weapon" my mom said.
"A tortilla press? Surely they won't think I plan to terrorize the flight attendants with it."
It weighed about 8 pounds, and my suitcase was already heavy with flea market and thrift store finds acquired during my short trip to San Jose.
The plan was to put the suitcase on the scale. I would unload the press from my carry on into the checked bag if it came in under 45 pounds
The scale flashed 51 pounds and beeped.
I guess it's coming on the plane with me.
I paid close attention to the monitors at security that spelled out what you could NOT expect to bring... lighters, liquids, knives, guns... nothing about tortilla presses.
At the x-ray machine, the security person raised her eyebrows but said nothing.
Tomorrow I plan on making tortillas for fresh tacos in Tuscaloosa.
