We have officially taken shopping for cake stands to a whole new level.
At the bakery we think functional and classic, if not sometimes functional and fun.
Now that we've got Mary's Cupboard we can expand our thinking to all that "consignment" conveys.
Think retro and funky and...unusual.
What fun would it be to bring THIS to the table with a cake underneath.
It's a ceramic cake saver, over 10 inches tall and 12 inches in diameter, and made to look like a giant strawberry cake.
Or this one...hand carved of monkey pod in the Phillipines, it has a revolving base. It's 12 inches tall and over 16 inches wide. You half expect to see a shrunken head when the cover is lifted.
The bottom can be used by itself as a lazy susan.
And there is always the old standby, a mid-century cake carrier from West Bend -- almost 7 inches tall with a diameter of 14 inches.
We have learned, since acquiring this cake saver, that almost everyone in Tuscaloosa has a grandmother or great aunt who used to have one of these.
BTW, this one still has it's magic stone. A piece of limestone imbedded in the inside of the cover that absorbs moisture, keeping the cake as fresh as was possible in the 1950's when this was made.
Like these?
Come see what's "new" at Mary's Cupboard.
