It's almost November and Thanksgiving is right around the corner, so naturally your thoughts go to pie, right? Well, my brother and I spent some quality time this afternoon at the place where pies come from. Or, more specifically, where the sweet potatoes, pumpkins and butternut squash for our Thanksgiving Pies at Mary's Cakes will come from.
And that would be right here <--- at Snow's Bend Farm, not 20 minutes from the bakery if you drive really fast (which of course you cannot do because half the distance to the farm is on a dirt road, making this a two-car-wash trip).
David Snow and Margaret Ann Toohey (the farmers) hosted a harvest celebration today. We met a lot of really nice people, enjoyed some good slow food, and were able to say we know EXACTLY where it came from. Here are the highlights...
There we are in the background, right behind the fall garden (close ups later).
The view from the back bale of the hay ride. I'm a city person with a dream in my next life to live on a (small, manageable) farm with goats so I can make goat cheese.
I am totally convinced that if I had a few goats, I would not have to deal with cutting this grass.
These pigs are fat and happy, blissfully ignorant that their future includes ham, bacon and sausage.
Ahhh, more pleasant thoughts, did I mention that our meal today included coleslaw?
And those yummy broccoli and pesto stuffed croissants we serve at the bakery? This is where they start.
How about some nice roasted or pickled beets?
And some peppers for the gumbo (they grow okra too), and tomatoes and squash...
You need a few of these to cut the grass (and clover, and whatever else needs chopping), turn the earth, and generally do "farm stuff" with your tractor when it is not hauling tourists.
David gave a lovely, funny and informative State of the Farm address from his organic podium. We applauded at all the right places...
Margaret Ann (and David too, but not in this picture) served up a heavenly feast and we all left with a greater appreciation for the food that comes to our table from Snow's Bend.
We'll be getting our delivery of pie-bound vegetables soon, and they'll be available for your Thanksgiving table by simply calling the bakery and placing an order.
