It's a Southern thing. The Groom's Cake.
While a bride's cake (known as a wedding cake outside the South) is often an elegant affair, a groom's cake is equally often less so.
Yes, some grooms want a simple stacked cake with chocolate or peanut butter or red velvet, but many more want something whimsical. Something that reflects their hobbies or interests.
And yes, you learn a lot about a groom by the cake he chooses.
And while we've done lots and lots of unusual cakes, a cake has to be really special to make this list.
A 3-D deer, or armadillo, or duck pond scene is common for outdoorsy guys and hunters -- not even considered for the list. A golf bag or golf scene? Yep, done lots of those too, not so unusual. Cars and airplanes? Nice, but ditto. Our Top 5 list of unusual cakes are ones that have been done only once, the ones we do a second take on when they are ordered, and the ones we often have to explain to customers who happen to wander in while we are decorating them.
We added a cake to our Top 5 list yesterday. The XBox 360. Under the chocolate fondant is a vanilla cake with white chocolate ganache filling and the controller is carved from rice crispies treats.
The rest of the list?
Well, there's the horse's patootie we did for a large animal veterinarian, and still my all-time favorite.
Or the chocolate Kirby vacuum cleaner cake (packaged to travel) for a Kirby salesman. We included a container of crumbled cake crumbs to be sprinkled around the table for effect. Now here's a man who loves his job as much as I do.
Or the Cobra, for the groom who loves his Mustang Cobra as much as he loves his bride...
Or the Michael Vick jersey (done AFTER the dog fighting scandal and AFTER he spent time in jail).
And that's what I love about this job, there is always something interesting and unusual just around the corner.
I wonder what they'll think of next?
