I had just gotten home from a Labor Day weekend barbecue and heard the news on television. Princess Diana had been in a car accident in Paris. Her boyfriend Dodi Fayed died at the scene, but her condition was unknown. She died later at the hospital.
In the late summer of 1997 I was in the process of moving to Finland to work at my company's home office. I watched the funeral on Finnish television and did not understand a word of the commentary, but the images of her young boys walking behind her coffin needed no translation.
And I cried when Elton John performed his tribute to Diana.
So now, almost 14 years later, her oldest son is getting married.
And he has requested a groom's cake -- a tradition from the American South, where I happen to live.
So, as a tribute, we're going to make a chocolate biscuit cake, and have it by the slice at the shop, at least through April 29, the date of the royal wedding.
Congratulations William and Kate. We miss your mum too.
