As the crow flies, we only had to travel about a half-mile from the shop to the wedding venue. It wasn't raining, and while a bit muggy, not too hot either.
So we loaded up the trusty PT Cruiser with four tiers of bride's cake and two tiers of grooms cake, and headed across the bridge from Northport to Tuscaloosa. Two left turns and we're there.
Ahhh, but the Druid City Arts Festival today includes a bike race which runs just past the historic L&N Train Station, our venue destination.
And just in case you've never traveled with a wedding cake in your car, you don't want to make any fast turns, cross too many lanes of traffic, or ever put yourself in a position to have to stop suddenly.
So we roll to a stop at the police barricade, lower the window, and plead ignorance. We've got a wedding cake to deliver, what should we do?
After first checking out our story by peeking in the back window, we are told to turn around, continue up the road three or four blocks, make a few more turns and take a circuitous path to the venue. Ever the helpful officer, he even radioed the police at the back barricade to let them know we were coming.
The second police officer tells us to drive as fast as we can in the left lane of traffic (in Tuscaloosa we drive on the RIGHT) and turn quickly into the parking lot.
Yeah, right. As fast as we can. Did I mention we had a wedding cake in the car and were trying to avoid fast turns?
We made it unscathed and set up the cakes.
And then I drove as fast as I could back to Northport.
I wonder if anyone mentioned the bike race to the bride when she booked the venue.
