We're competing to win a mixer on the website GetBackToScratch.com.
It's like this one, but this is a cake. The chef standing next to the cake (though I would never recognize him since I don't watch the show) is Buddy Valastro of TLC's reality show "Cake Boss," who is helping promote the contest.
This particular 80-quart mixer is one I would purchase if I won the lottery (right after the vacation in Tahiti and the walk-in freezer). The $29K list price is not exactly in my range, but I could buy a used one tomorrow for about $7,000 on eBay.
For now, we're vying for the free version being given away as the grand prize in the GetBackToScratch contest.
All we have to do is rally our fans and customers, and get them to cast daily votes for us over a three-month period. And do a better job than any of the other contestants.
The idea of a NEW mixer is worth the effort. Not a single thing in the bakery was new, save the computer and the mop sink, when Mary's Cakes & Pastries opened almost five years ago. Our current mixer is circa 1970 (or older), and holds 20-quarts. While it seemed huge at the time, we fight over it now, for buttercream, cake, cookies, pastries, bread and other items.
But the real prize is more than the mixer.
It's proving that a tiny little bakery in Northport, Alabama, run by a middle-aged woman following her lifelong dream, can compete nationally and win. One of our competitors is a large cupcake bakery with tens of thousands of followers.
It's also showing that Tuscaloosa, Alabama is alive and well after the deadly tornado of April 27.
And there's more to Tuscaloosa than collegiate sports. Of course I am not a complete idiot... our entry in the contest are our UA-themed shortbread cookies, most popular on football game days.
Another competitor is a vegan bakery in Austin, Texas. They also have a lot of fans.
Alabama has beaten Texas once before for a national title, it's time to do it again.
The voting address, again, is www.getbacktoscratch.com/directory. If you want to help us, copy this link and send it to your friends. Ask them to vote for us, EVERY DAY, until August 21.
